After the Self-Employed Income Support Scheme (SEISS) went live on Wednesday, HMRC has today issued an update to agents advising them not to used clients’ Government Gateway credentials to make claims on their behalf.

The advice is that doing this ‘will trigger a fraud alert and will result in delays to receiving payment.’

HMRC’s update to agents gives guidance on how they can help clients in other ways:

  • Talking clients through why they may, or may not be eligible
  • Encouraging clients to use the online checker, noting that agents can use the checker on a client’s behalf
  • Encouraging clients who do not have their Government Gateway credentials to set them up online now
  • Reminding clients that the SEISS application portal is open to taxpayers on a staged basis between 13th and 18th May and that access to the portal to make a claim is on a day randomly allocated by HMRC
  • Helping clients understand that though they will not be able to apply before their allocated claim date, they will be able to make a claim after that date
  • Supporting clients to find other help available on GOV.UK, if they are not eligible for a grant under the SEISS scheme.

How we can help

If you would like to make a claim but have questions about what is available or how to navigate the claims process, please contact our free, email-based helpline. Further details about this can be found on our Coronavirus Hub along with other articles which may be of assistance.
