On Friday, the Chancellor announced that changes to the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme (CJRS) will apply a month earlier than previously advised.
The change means that part-time working will be permitted from 1 July, but it is noted that this is only for those staff that have been furloughed by 10 June for a minimum of three weeks from that date. The CJRS grant can be claimed for the part of the salary not worked by these employees.
In its factsheet, the government stated about the CJRS that, ‘from midnight on 24 May 2020, the scheme had been used by 1 million employers, to protect around 8.4 million jobs and the total value of claims made was £15 billion.’
Martin Johnson, partner at Torgersens said, ‘Our small business community will doubtless welcome this announcement, but they need to ensure as many staff as required are furloughed by the 10th June to maximise the benefit of this additional flexibility.’
