We should all be aware of the increase in telephone calls claiming to be from HMRC about tax issues.

The message in the automated calls tells the recipient that HMRC are threatening to file a lawsuit against them. The instruction is to ‘press one’ to speak to a caseworker to make a payment.

Though not a new scam, there have been an increasing number of calls of this type over the past few weeks.

HMRC guidance, ‘Examples of HMRC related phishing emails and bogus contact’ offers examples of scam email, SMS and text messages to help differentiate bogus from genuine approaches. Worthy of note is the fact that HMRC does not include active links or attachments in its emails.
