Torgersens Chartered Accountants is a 30-strong team of hard-working professionals based in Sunderland, Gosforth, and Jarrow. In addition to our comprehensive range of accountancy and tax services, we offer business advice to help SME owners achieve growth and success.

We are immensely proud of our strong North East roots that go back over 50 years. To summarise our key milestones:

  • The firm first came into being in 1971 in Sunderland as Milburn Torgersen following a merger of two local accountancy firms. Stephen Torgersen joined the practice in 1973 (more about Stephen later!)
  • In the mid ‘70s, Peter Sharp, a local sole practitioner, joined the practice
  • After a further merger in 1981 with local firm Nicholson Forsyth, Torgersen Nicholson & Co. was created - the forerunner to the current practice
  • Later in the 1980’s two further sole practitioners, Reg Comrie and Paul Youern moved their practices into Somerford Buildings, and their clients were gradually handed over to Torgersens when they retired
  • In 2004, the practice took the decision to join the international UHY Hacker Young accountancy network and was rebranded as UHY Torgersens
  • In 2006, the practice acquired Jarrow-based Brian Green and Co. creating a second office base and then in 2015 Gosforth-based Kinsey Jones was acquired, adding a third team to the firm
  • In 2020, with our strong local presence in three offices and five experienced partners, we left UHY and became independent once again, under the name Torgersens Chartered Accountants

What’s next?

And now, in 2022, we have said a very fond farewell to Stephen Torgersen who, after 51 years, has retired as a partner. We’re delighted to advise though that he is staying on as a consultant to continue giving us the benefit of his shrewd business ability and technical expertise.

We recently welcomed several new colleagues to our teams in Sunderland and Gosforth. Our best wishes to them all!

The focus of Torgersens is now, more than ever, on supporting the growth of businesses in the North East. Watch out for some exciting news in the coming weeks about the next stage in the on-going development of our firm.
