Introduced last September, the Kickstart Scheme is a government initiative that provides funding to employers for 6-month paid work placements for 16-24 year olds.

The placements are designed to create jobs for young people on Universal Credit who are at risk of long-term unemployment.

Open to all businesses of any size, in any sector, there are some criteria for the job that must be met:

  • It must last six months and be at least 25 hours per week
  • Support for must be included to help the young people get work after they finish their Kickstart Scheme job
  • It must not replace existing/planned jobs or cause existing employers or contractors to reduce their employment
  • The job must only require basic training

What the funding includes

For each placement, the government will pay:

  • 100% of National Minimum Wage for 25 hours for a total of 6 months
    Associated employer NI contributions
  • Employer minimum automatic enrolment contributions
  • A grant of £1,500 for setup and training costs

The scheme is due to run until December 2021 with the possibility of an extension.
