Introduced last September, the Kickstart Scheme is a government initiative that provides funding to employers for 6-month paid work placements for 16-24 year olds.
The placements are designed to create jobs for young people on Universal Credit who are at risk of long-term unemployment.
Open to all businesses of any size, in any sector, there are some criteria for the job that must be met:
- It must last six months and be at least 25 hours per week
- Support for must be included to help the young people get work after they finish their Kickstart Scheme job
- It must not replace existing/planned jobs or cause existing employers or contractors to reduce their employment
- The job must only require basic training
What the funding includes
For each placement, the government will pay:
- 100% of National Minimum Wage for 25 hours for a total of 6 months
Associated employer NI contributions - Employer minimum automatic enrolment contributions
- A grant of £1,500 for setup and training costs
The scheme is due to run until December 2021 with the possibility of an extension.
